Karrar Al-Azzawi

Karrar Al-Azzawi is an Iraqi-Norwegian director, producer, and cinematographer based between Norway and Iraq. He is the co-founder of the Norwegian production company KAJ Film. He holds a BFA in Film Directing from the Norwegian Film School.


His international debut, Baghdad on Fire, premiered at CPH:DOX in 2023 and went on to travel extensively through Europe, the United States, Canada, and the Arab world, earning multiple awards and nominations along the way before being broadcast on Al Jazeera, BBC, France Télévisions, NRK, DR, and other international networks.


Prior to his career as a filmmaker, Al-Azzawi spent several years navigating the asylum process. During this period, while living in a refugee camp in Greece in 2016, he directed the short film Just Crumbs and launched Forgotten, a series of international photography exhibitions across Europe raising awareness about the global refugee crisis.


Al-Azzawi is currently in post-production on Daughters of the Wind, with three additional projects in development: The Iraqi Warriors, In My Mother's Heart, and Ahmed Umar, the Artist and his Shadow.
